Styal members extract their revenge in a good cause

THE Family Fun Day is now a regular feature of the Styal Captain’s fund-raising efforts for his chosen charity.

This year’s incumbent Mark Holland has chosen the Children’s Adventure Farm Trust as his designated cause and the Fun Day helped to add a substantial four-figure sum to his growing total.

But Mark, along with a number of past Captains, knows that there is ‘no pain no gain’, as one of the most remunerative features of the day is for them to be installed in stocks while they are pelted with wet sponges by their many ‘friends’.

This year saw a first as Lady Captain Sue Harney became the first-ever in her role to endure the stocks and Mark ensured that she had a real wet baptism.

Another big money-raiser was ‘Beat the Keeper’ where Styal’s Director of Golf Glynn Traynor did his best to keep a clean sheet against some very determined sharp shooters and generally managed to come out on top.

There were plenty of other attractions to amuse all ages including a coconut shy, a bouncy castle, tombola, raffles, a putting contest and a bouncy ball race.

Mark Holland said: “Fortunately the day was blessed by good weather and I would like to thank all who helped and contributed to make this a really memorable day adding plenty to the charity pot.”

Styal’s men played their club championship and with rounds of 65/67 for a total of 132 Abeeb Khan was the main man from Martyn Walsh 134 and Terry Gills 136.

In a Sunday Stableford at Styal Mike Core eased home with 37 points, one more than James Green.

In the Styal Seniors Championship Terry Hanna is the current leader on 430 from Colin Richards 432 and Steve Walker 433.

The latest round of the Styal ladies Summer Cup Sue Binks led in with 17 points, one ahead of Rose McCormack and Yee Lee.

Edge’s ladies played a singles Stableford and Sue Kendrick shared top spot on 34 points, one clear of Sue Slater, Jean Walker and L Hornsby.

Jamie foiled by birdie burst

MACCLESFIELD Golf Club’s European Tour star Jamie Donaldson (pictured) came within two shots of winning his first-ever Tour event in Barseback, Sweden, in the SAS Masters.

Donaldson 34 and a professional for nine years, finished with a fine five-under-par 68 to add to his opening rounds of 71, 72, 71 for a total of 284 to be the clubhouse leader.

But Argentinian Ricardo Gonzalez birdied five of the last six holes to take the lead and win by two shots from Donaldson who is enjoying a great season on the Tour with several top placings.

His winnings should ensure that Jamie keeps his coveted card for next season as he moves into a comfortable spot in the Tour’s Order of Merit.

Mr & Mrs Competition
HEATON Moor Golf Club members can look forward to winning a superb prize of a golfing break at the excellent facilities of Villeneuve Sur Lot Golf Resort in South West France thanks to the efforts of their Captain and Lady Captain Ken and Hazel Lappin.
They were taking part in the Mr and Mrs Challenge hosted by Didsbury Golf Club, a unique competition involving the husband and wife/ Captain and Lady Captain’s teams from six clubs in the Manchester area.
Looking after the visitors from the other five clubs involved were Didsbury Captain and Lady Captain John and Peggy Haslam who linked with WGTB Golf to set up the Challenge once they realised the unusual significance of six husband and wife teams in such a close proximity.
Joining John and Peggy for a 13-hole American Greensome Stableford were Ken and Hazel Lappin from Heaton Moor, Alan and Barbara Sadler (Davyhulme Park), John and Lynn Truelove (Crompton and Royton), Phil and Ann McCormick (Disley) and Graham and Joyce Hadfield (New Mills) in a ‘Winner Takes All’ scenario.
John Haslam said: “Peggy and I are only the second husband and wife team to take the top offices in the 118-year history of the Didsbury club and although husbands and wives can often be Captains and Lady Captains it is very rare that they take office during the same period.
“And to get six clubs in the same area to have this situation could well be a first in golf throughout the world.
“With the help of WGTB Golf we were able to set up the competition and were delighted that all six pairs were able to take part in a really sociable occasion to enjoy each other’s company and the Didsbury course and clubhouse facilities.
“Peggy and I were drawn to play with Ken and Hazel Lappin and got a real surprise as over 50 years ago we all knew each other when we were growing up together in Heaton Moor so we certainly had plenty to reminisce about.
The competition was very close with just four points separating the pairs but clear winners with 29 points were Ken and Hazel Lappin.
“It was a real day to remember and we will be hoping to meet everyone again,” enthused Ken.
“We were delighted to win such a great prize that will help to boost funds for our chosen charity of Eyeline, shortly to be renamed Walthew House and formerly the Stockport Institute for the deaf, dumb and blind.
“I would like to thank Didsbury Golf Club for providing such a great course to play on, for the great catering and warm reception by the club and to John and Peggy for their superb hospitality and WGTB Golf for their excellent organisation and of course Villeneuve Sur Lot for their sponsorship.
“Hazel and I will be looking to invite all of the participants back to Heaton Moor to play and build on the new friendships we made at this unique event.”

Ken is just ace at the Edge
ALDERLEY Edge Golf Club’s 11-handicapper Ken Hall has been playing golf for six years at the club and prior to that for a number of years at AVRO Golf Club with a best handicap of nine.
But like hundreds and thousands of other amateur golfers he had never achieved the coveted hole-in-one.
But then like buses they turned up twice within the short space of seven days.
Ken’s first ace was at Rhuddlan Golf Club when he was enjoying a break with a group from his home club.
His seven iron tee shot on the 155-yard 17th par three flew unerringly into the cup without touching the green and was witnessed with great joy by the Edge players who had just left the green.
“Amazingly”, said Ken, “One of our own group of four did not see it as he was looking for his own ball and was not aware of the ace until the end of the round when there was plenty of drinks on offer, courtesy of myself, in the clubhouse.
”The ace did not help our team to win and was about my only decent contribution to the score.”
And just a few days later, playing in the Saturday Stableford at Alderley Edge lightning struck again for Ken.
He was playing the 125-yard sixth and his nine iron tee shot bounced once before going into the hole to set up more clubhouse celebrations.
Ken added: “I now have a weird felling on the tee of every par three that I am playing that I will get another ace – but I am sure that this will soon wear off.”

“Didsbury provided a superb course and excellent off-course help in very department and it was a pleasure to play at such a fine venue.”

Ringway’s spectacular celebration
THE RINGWAY Centenary Ball was a truly spectacular celebration of the 100 years of the top Cheshire club.
There was a special marquee erected outside the clubhouse to accommodate the 400 guests with the main entertainment provided by the wonderful Halle Rock Band.
It was a busy evening for the Captain David Howard, Lady Captain Liz Brooke and President Ian Berry who welcomed the members and their guests to the auspicious occasion.
The marquee and tables had been decorated superbly by ladies from the club and they were rewarded with a day at Rookery Hall Spa, Nantwich, plus a chauffeur to get them to their destination and return home.
All in all an event to remember and a very fitting way to celebrate the club’s great history and achievements.

Shrigley Hall News
Shrigley Hall players were also celebrating after winning the Manchester Alliance club team of the year for a third successive time.

Consistent displays throughout the Alliance winter season had racked up enough points to stay well clear of the pack.

A second singles Stableford saw Lynda Rolland lead in with 37 points from Mark Kleynhaus and Richard Park, both 36.
